Come August, my hose does as much work as my net — a Florida pool loses more water to evaporation in that one month than most Northern pools lose all summer. The evaporation math — how much, why, and what it does to your chemistry — is one of the first things I learned cold on the route.
How much water a Florida pool actually loses
In a typical South Florida summer — warm water, warm air, a modest breeze — a pool loses roughly 1/4 to 1/2 inch of water per day to evaporation, or about 1.5 to 3.5 inches over a week. On a hot, breezy day with low humidity it can hit 3/4 inch. Now run it on a real pool: 15,000 gallons, about 450 sq ft of surface. That quarter-to-half inch works out to about80–140 gallons per dayin mid-summer — before anyone splashes out a drop or you backwash the filter.
Call it 100 gallons a day. That's roughly 3,000 gallons a month — a fifth of the pool, gone into the sky, every month of summer. The water bill notices. The chemistry notices more.

The four variables that drive evaporation
- Water temperature vs. air temperature.The bigger the gap — hot pool, cool night — the faster evaporation runs. It's why a warm pool steams off water during the first cool front of fall.
- Relative humidity.Dry air pulls water out faster. It's the reason Phoenix pools evaporate faster than Miami pools at the same temperature — our humidity is the one variable working in your favor down here.
- Wind speed.Moving air sweeps the saturated layer off the surface and replaces it with drier air. A screened enclosure dramatically cuts evaporation for exactly this reason — it kills the wind.
- Surface area. Linear with pool size. Double the surface, double the evaporation. Simple as that.
Evaporation is the biggest heat thief on your pool
Here's the number that surprises people. Per the PHTA, evaporating one gallon of pool water removes roughly 8,730 BTUs of heat energy, and evaporation is responsible for about 50% of all pool heat loss— more than radiation, convection, and conduction combined. On that 100-gallon summer day, your pool sheds over 870,000 BTUs out the top.

What evaporation does to your chemistry
Water leaves the pool as pure vapor. Every dissolved solid it carried stays behind— calcium, salt, stabilizer, all of it — and concentrates in the water that's left. Over a Florida summer, here's what I watch climb:
- Calcium hardness drifts upward, especially with hard Florida fill water topping off the autofill day after day.
- Salt climbs above the cell's rated range in salt-chlorine pools — nobody added a bag, the water just left without it.
- CYA creeps upward through the dry stretches, then crashes back down when a heavy rain dilutes it.
- Total dissolved solids (TDS) build to levels that trigger salt-like taste, reduced sanitizer efficacy, and scale.
Evaporation, rain, or a leak? Reading the water level
Here's the rule I use at every stop: a normal summer week drops 1.5 to 3.5 inches, and that is evaporation, not a leak.Don't panic over the weekly number — confirm it with a bucket test instead. Set a bucket of pool water on the top step, mark the level inside and outside, run the pump on its normal schedule, and compare after 24 hours. If the pool and the bucket dropped the same, it's evaporation. The South Florida evaporation cycle
Down here the pattern is whiplash, and it runs May through October. Two dry, breezy weeks concentrate everything — calcium, salt, CYA, and TDS all tick up while the autofill quietly replaces the water underneath them. Then a tropical downpour dumps inches of fresh water in an afternoon, the pool overflows out the deck drain, and a chunk of your stabilizer reading leaves with it. That's why the same pool can test high-CYA in June and low-CYA in July without anyone touching a chemical. After a big storm, the heavy-rain recovery sequence is its own chemistry event.
Two local specifics worth knowing. A screened enclosure is quietly one of the best evaporation controls in Florida — it kills the wind across the surface, and wind is the one driver you can actually block. And our fill water is hard, so every gallon the autofill adds brings more calcium in with it. Evaporate, refill, repeat — calcium only moves in one direction until you drain.
How I manage evaporation on a route
- Covers when practical.A bubble or liquid cover cuts evaporation 50–70%. Great on a rarely-used pool; not realistic on a residential pool the kids swim in every afternoon.
- Read the weekly drop right.1.5 to 3.5 inches in summer is normal. It's the bucket-test gap — pool dropping more than the bucket — that flags a leak, not the weekly number alone.
- Test CH, salt, and TDS monthly in summer.When the numbers climb out of range, a partial drain-and-refill is the reset — you can't chemical your way out of concentration.
- Set the autofill high-limitso it doesn't run for hours on a skimmer-deep pool during a heavy-evaporation week. An autofill that never shuts off will also hide a leak from you for months.
Indoor pools are a different animal
Indoor commercial pools evaporate into the building, which is why natatorium humidity control is its own engineering discipline. Relative humidity should sit at 50–60% for occupant comfort and building protection, with air temperature held 2–4°F above water temperature to discourage condensation and slow evaporation. A natatorium without a proper dehumidifier has a short life — the roof structure corrodes from water vapor in a matter of years.
Evaporation is physics, not a problem to be solved. The goal is to understand it well enough that the chemistry, the water bill, and the heater schedule are planned around it instead of fighting it.
