Why most South Florida pools are running 1990s equipment in 2026

Walk any Boca, Delray, or Lauderdale neighborhood and you'll find pools running single-speed pumps with $80/month electricity tabs, 1995-era gas-heater ignition controls, and decade-old undersized salt cells. The pool industry sells repairs faster than upgrades — most homeowners don't hear “variable-speed” until the old pump seizes.

We work the other way. We watch your equipment every visit. When something is reaching end-of-life — bearing whine, salt cell scaling, heater inefficiency creep — we tell you up front, run the math on repair-vs-replace, and show you what an upgrade actually costs and saves. No pressure, no commission games.

The single biggest ROI upgrade

Variable-speed pumps

If your pool still runs a single-speed pump, this is the upgrade that pays for itself faster than any other piece of equipment you can buy.

Annual savings
$500 – $1,200
Off your electric bill, every year, for the life of the pump.
Payback period
18 – 36 months
After that, every dollar saved is profit. Pumps last 10–12 years with proper care.
FPL rebates
$150 – $300
Florida Power & Light rebate on qualifying variable-speed pumps. We help you file.
Why it saves so much
  • Pump energy use scales with the cube of speed. Running at 50% RPM uses ~12.5% of the power, not 50%.
  • Most filtration runs fine at 1,200–1,800 RPM — single-speed pumps are stuck at 3,450 RPM 24/7.
  • Lower flow rate = better filtration (longer contact time with filter media).
  • Variable-speed pumps are dramatically quieter at low RPM — most homeowners don’t even know it’s running.
What we install
  • Pentair IntelliFlo3 VSF, IntelliFlo VSF, SuperFlo VS
  • Hayward TriStar VS, MaxFlo VS
  • Jandy ePump, FloPro VS
  • Sta-Rite IntelliPro VS
Right pump is the one that matches your existing automation, plumbing, and pool size. We size to actual gallons and turnover requirements, not whatever's on the truck.

Heaters — heat pump, gas, or solar

South Florida heater selection comes down to how often you use the pool, how fast you want it warm, and how much electrical capacity your panel has.

Best for daily / weekly use
Heat pumps
  • • 3–5× efficiency vs. gas
  • • 12–24 hour heat-up time
  • • Works above 50°F ambient — Florida year-round
  • • AquaCal, Pentair UltraTemp, Hayward HeatPro, Raypak
  • • 10–15 year typical life with proper chemistry
Best for fast / occasional
Gas heaters
  • • 1–2 hour heat-up time
  • • High operating cost in use vs. heat pumps
  • • Right call for spas, vacation homes, weekend use
  • • Raypak, Pentair MasterTemp, Hayward H-Series
  • • Permits required — we coordinate
Best for low-bill comfort
Solar
  • • Near-zero operating cost after install
  • • Roof real-estate required (typically 50–100% of pool surface area)
  • • 8–12°F temperature lift, weather-dependent
  • • Often paired with a heat pump for guaranteed temp
  • • 15–20 year panel life

Salt chlorine generators — install, replace, right-size

Saltwater pools are easier to swim in (softer feel, no chlorine smell, less skin and eye irritation) and easier to maintain day-to-day — the salt cell generates chlorine on demand instead of you handling tablets. The catch: cells scale, cells fail, and undersized cells run themselves to death in 2–3 years.

The rule we live by: cell rating should be 2× pool gallons. A 20,000-gallon pool needs a 40,000-gallon-rated cell. Undersized cells run 24/7 just to keep up — they burn out fast and cost you triple over a decade. We size correctly the first time.

What we install: Pentair IntelliChlor IC40 / IC60, Hayward AquaRite (T-Cell-9 / T-Cell-15), Jandy AquaPure, CircuPool RJ-series. All with manufacturer warranty registration and salinity verification after install.

Smart pool control

Automation systems

Pentair ScreenLogic / IntelliCenter, Hayward OmniLogic, Jandy iAquaLink. Smartphone control of pump speeds, schedules, lighting, heater, salt cell output, spa mode, and freeze protection.

Most homeowners use automation to: turn on the spa heater on the drive home, schedule pump runs around peak electric rates, pause filtration during heavy rain, get freeze-protect alerts in cold snaps, and verify the pool is running normally while traveling.

Typical install: $1,200 – $3,500 for hardware + install, depending on system complexity and existing equipment compatibility.

Lighting upgrades

LED retrofit

Old incandescent or halogen pool lights pull 300–500W and burn out every 1–2 years. LED retrofits pull 30–80W, last 10+ years, and offer color-changing options (Pentair IntelliBrite, Hayward ColorLogic, Jandy WaterColors).

Niche-compatible LED retrofits typically install without draining the pool. Bulb-only swaps run $400–$800 per light. Full niche-and-fixture replacement runs higher and requires a licensed electrician — coordinated through our trusted licensed partners.

Electrical work always goes to a Florida-licensed electrician. Pool light circuits live where water and current meet — never DIY, never a route guy.

Filter replacement & equipment pad rebuilds

Filter tanks have a 10–15 year life in Florida sun. Cracks, manifold failures, or worn internals usually mean replacement, not repair. We size and install cartridge, DE, or sand for what your pool actually needs (most South Florida pools belong on cartridge — better filtration, no backwash water waste).

Equipment pad rebuilds. 15+ years of patches — corroded plumbing, mismatched valves, dead automation, fail-prone unions — sometimes the right call is to scope the whole pad and rebuild clean. We design and quote in writing; licensed contractor network handles the build. Adds 15–20 years of reliable service. Dramatically fewer emergency calls.

How an upgrade actually goes, start to finish

  1. 1
    Assessment & right-sizing (us)
We come on-site, evaluate your existing equipment, measure flow rates, look at electrical capacity, factor in your pool size, automation, and how the pool is actually used. We size the upgrade to your pool, not to a sales sheet.
  2. 2
Written quote with specs (us, with the contractor)
You receive a written, itemized quote: exact equipment model, install scope, timeline, contractor's name and license number, and rebate eligibility. Manufacturer warranty terms are explicit. Permits flagged if required.
  3. 3
    You approve in writing
Nothing is ordered until you approve. You can decline, take time, get a second opinion. No pressure tactics.
  4. 4
    Licensed contractor installs
Manufacturer-authorized installer for warranty integrity. Permits pulled where required. Electrical work performed by Florida-licensed electricians. Old equipment hauled away.
  5. 5
    Verify, register, resume service (us)
We come back, confirm the install is correct, register manufacturer warranties on your behalf, file FPL rebate paperwork if applicable, and resume weekly service. The new equipment becomes part of your pool's log.

Diagnosis from us. Install by licensed contractors. No corners cut.

We don't pretend to be a plumbing contractor, an electrician, or a manufacturer-authorized service center for every brand. We're a CPO-licensed pool service company that knows pools cold and partners with the right licensed Florida specialists for every install.

When work is performed, you get the contractor's license number on the invoice — verifiable in the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation database. Manufacturer warranties are registered correctly so they're intact when you need them. Permits are pulled where required. The job we won't do is the one we can't do correctly.

Specialty Service

Pool Resurfacing & Renovation

When the surface itself reaches end-of-life — Diamond Brite past 10 years, plaster delamination, widespread etching, missing tile — replacement of the surface is the upgrade. Investment range $8,000–$30,000 depending on finish and tile/coping scope.

We coordinate finish selection, drain, demo, install, and refill end-to-end. All renovation work performed by trusted licensed partners (CPC-licensed Florida pool contractors).
