Gas line size lookup (natural gas)

Measure the actual pipe path, not the straight-line distance.
Minimum pipe size: 1¼" black iron
400,000 BTU/hr needs ≈ 400 CFH. At a 50-ft table length, 1¼" Schedule-40 carries 442 CFH. If any other appliance shares this run (range, dryer, generator, pool + spa heater pair), the whole run must be re-sized for total load — that changes the answer.
This lookup is reference only — it is not a design document. Gas piping must be sized, installed, and pressure-tested by a licensed gas contractor, and undersized lines are the #1 cause of ignition lockouts we see on pool heaters. Propane and CSST use different tables entirely.
A gas pool heater only delivers its rated BTU if the gas line delivers the rated fuel — and a heater that “doesn't heat like it used to” usually never got the fuel it needed, because the line has been starving it all along. Verify the gas supply with a manometer before condemning a single part on the heater.
The answer up front: pipe size by BTU and run length
For a residential natural gas heater at typical delivery pressure (7" water column), the ballpark looks like this. Size from the input BTU/hron the nameplate — not output — and measure the longest run from the meter to the heater.

So the two questions that come up most: a 400,000 BTU heater wants 1 1/4" pipe on a 50-foot run and 1 1/2" at 100 feet; a 250,000 BTU heater wants 1" and 1 1/4". These are illustrative. Always confirm with the current code table and with a manometer testat the heater inlet under full fire. Static pressure is meaningless; the number that matters is what the heater sees when it's burning.
The two fuels and their realities
- Natural gas (NG)— low pressure (7–14 inches of water column typical at the heater). Bigger pipe needed for the same BTU because the gas itself is lower energy density (~1,000 BTU/ft³).
- Propane (LP)— higher pressure at the regulator, higher energy density (~2,500 BTU/ft³). Smaller pipe can carry the same BTU, but the second-stage regulator sizing matters as much as the pipe.

How to size the line in four steps
- Find the heater's input BTU/hron the nameplate. Not output — input.
- Measure the longest runfrom the meter (NG) or second-stage regulator (LP) to the heater. Include the fitting equivalents; two elbows add ~2–3 feet of equivalent length.
- Add up all applianceson the same branch — house furnace, water heater, range, dryer — if they share the run. Gas lines are sized for simultaneous demand.
- Look up the pipe size in the appropriate sizing table (NFPA 54 for NG, NFPA 58 for LP, or the local plumbing code amendment).
Work the math deliberately. A 400,000 BTU heater sharing a branch with a 199,000 BTU tankless water heater and a 65,000 BTU range isn't a 400,000 BTU problem — it's a 664,000 BTU problem, and the table row that applies just changed. That's why a heater fires fine on a Tuesday afternoon and locks out the moment somebody starts a shower.
Field test: the manometer reading
- Isolate the heater. Attach a manometer to the gas-valve inlet test port.
- Fire the heater at full call-for-heat.
- Fire every other gas appliance in the house simultaneously — worst-case demand, on purpose.
- Read inlet pressure. If it's below the manufacturer's minimum (commonly 5" WC for NG heaters), the line or the meter is undersized. Call the gas utility before touching the heater further.

If a heater is running rich, sooting, or randomly locking out on a slow heat rise, manometer the inlet before condemning any part on the heater. Eight out of ten of those calls end at the gas line, not the heater.
Regulators and the propane two-stage rule
Propane installations always use two-stage regulation: a first-stage regulator at the tank drops tank pressure to about 10 psi; a second-stage near the appliance drops that to 11" WC. A single-stage system might work for months and then fail on the first cold morning when tank pressure dips. Once the heater is more than about 100 feet from the tank, two-stage isn't optional — it's necessary.
The South Florida starving-heater pattern
Down here the failure has a season. The heater sits idle all summer, then the first January cold snap hits and everything fires at once — pool heater at full call-for-heat, furnace, tankless water heater, maybe an outdoor kitchen added to the same branch two years ago without re-running the sizing math. That simultaneous demand is exactly what the code tables size for, and exactly what nobody tested on a warm October afternoon.
Two more local realities. South Florida heater pads sit at the back corner of the lot more often than not, so 80–100-foot runs are normal — which pushes a 400,000 BTU heater into 1 1/2" territory. And on propane, that same January morning is when a marginal single-stage setup finally shows itself: tank pressure dips in the cold, the regulator can't hold, and the heater locks out during the one week of the year the customer actually wants it.
When to call a pro
Running new gas pipe, upsizing a line, or swapping regulators is licensed-contractor work — and the meter itself belongs to the utility, so an undersized meter is their call, not yours.
