Heat pumps pull warmth from the air, so a cold snap can stop one from heating. One that quits below about 50°F is normal behavior, not a failure. A gas heater still works in cold weather.

Heater not heating?

Most "dead" heaters aren't dead. Check the cheap thing first.

We work a fixed sequence from the cheapest likely cause to the most expensive, and you see the finding at each step before anyone talks about parts.

The dirty-filter trap

Nine times out of ten, it's starved, not broken.

Almost every heater needs proper water flow to ignite and stay running, and a clogged filter chokes it off. We pull the cartridge and run the system first. If it fires, you just got a heater repair for the price of a filter rinse.

If a company ever "repaired" your heater without touching the filter, get a second opinion.

Every diagnostic starts at the pad: flow and filter first, error code second, parts last.

Heat pump quits in a cold snap

Normal behavior below about 50°F, not a fault. Heat pumps pull warmth from the air; a gas heater still works in cold weather.

Error codes flashing

Flow faults (often a code in the 100s), HP/high-pressure and ignition lockouts. Raypak LO, Pentair MasterTemp, Hayward H-Series: we read the code and tell you what it means for your unit.

Won't fire / no flame

Igniter, gas valve, pressure switch or flame sensor. We isolate the failure before any parts get ordered.

Won't hold temperature

Bypass valve, water flow rate, gas pressure or thermostat sensor. Often a small fix mistaken for a full replacement.

Compressor noise or vibration

Failing fan motor, low refrigerant, or a compressor at end of life. We open the panel, listen, measure, and quote honest options.

Water on the pad

Usually just condensation. A lot of water clearly coming from the unit often means a failed heat exchanger. If you can see it leaking, shut the pump off and call us.

Is it worth fixing?

Repair or replace? Here's the honest math.

Small electrical and flow parts are worth fixing on a younger heater. The two big internals, the heat exchanger and the compressor, are where repair stops making sense. You always get the numbers in writing first: we don't decide for you, we give you the math and the recommendation.

Every repair is diagnosed first and quoted in writing before any part is ordered.

Rule of thumb:repair if the heater is under about 10 years old and the fix is under about 30% of a new unit. Replace if it's 15+ years old, the exchanger or compressor is gone, or the repair crosses about 50% of replacement.

Repair makes sense when…

  • The heater is under about 10 years old
  • It's one isolated part: sensor, igniter, relay, flow switch or gas valve
  • The quote is under about 30% of a new unit
  • The water's been kept balanced, so the exchanger isn't etched or scaled

Replacement makes sense when…

  • It's 15+ years old, whatever failed
  • The heat exchanger or compressor has failed ($4,000–$5,000 to fix)
  • The repair quote is over about 50% of replacement
  • It's the second repair on the same heater in two years
  • You can see it leaking from the unit

Replacing? 3-year warranty on all Hayward and Jandy heaters. Other brands keep their full manufacturer warranty, registered for you at install.

Choosing a new heater

Heat pump, gas or solar? What works in South Florida.

For most homeowners replacing a dead heater, a right-sized heat pump is the lowest lifetime cost. Gas earns its keep with a spa, or when you want heat fast in any weather.

Most South Florida pools

Heat pump

Cost to run
Lowest and most consistent; far more efficient than gas
Heat-up
Steady; gas is faster
In a cold snap
Loses output, and may quit below about 50°F. That's normal, not a fault.
Watch out for
Refrigerant work needs an EPA 608-certified technician

Best for: most pools here, since it stays warm enough year-round for a heat pump to beat gas on cost.

Gas

Cost to run
Highest per hour
Heat-up

Watch out for
Expensive to run continuously; gas-line upsizing goes to a licensed gas contractor

Best for: spas and hot tubs, and occasional fast heat-up.

Solar

Cheapest
Heat-up
Depends on your roof and sun
In a cold snap

Watch out for
Can leak onto and damage your roof, and may void a roof warranty

Best for: budget heating, if the roof allows.

Watch out for
Salt air destroys the units

Rarely the right call here. In a coastal home, a heat pump costs far less to run.

Heating a spa?Gas heats fastest and works in any weather, which is why it's the usual pick for spas and hot tubs, even though it costs more per hour to run.

All major brands: Hayward, Raypak, Pentair, AquaCal, Jandy, Sta-Rite. New installs are right-sized to your flow, quoted in writing, and installed with the manufacturer warranty intact. 3-year warranty on all Hayward and Jandy heaters.

~$10,000

The bad-install mistake we check for

A diverter valve run closed, or a 3-inch line forcing too much water through a heater rated for about 70 GPM, swells and blows the heat exchanger and can take the pump with it. We've seen that one valve cost a homeowner roughly $10,000. So we check the diverter and the heater's sizing against your actual flow.

20–30 yrs vs 2–3

Water chemistry decides how long it lasts

With balanced water and a yearly cleaning, a heater can last 20–30 years. Acidic water etches the heat exchanger; high calcium scales it shut. Either one can mean a new heater every 2–3 years. Balanced water is the cheapest heater insurance there is, which is why we test your water on site at every heater diagnostic and tell you if it's hurting the exchanger.

FAQ

Pool heater questions, answered

How much does pool heater repair cost in Boca Raton?

Most pool heater repairs in Boca Raton run $250–$1,800 for gas or heat-pump units: sensors, igniters, relays, flow switches, gas valves and control boards, diagnosed and quoted in writing first. A new heat exchanger or compressor runs $4,000–$5,000, and at that point a whole new heater ($5,000–$7,000 installed) is usually the smarter spend.

Why is my pool heater not heating?

Nine times out of ten it's a dirty filter starving the heater of flow. Almost every heater needs proper water flow to ignite and stay running, so the first step is pulling the filter cartridge and running the system. The two most common error codes, a flow fault (often a code in the 100s) and HP/high-pressure, both routinely trace back to the filter.

My heat pump stopped heating during a cold front. Is it broken?

Probably not. Heat pumps pull warmth from the air, so a cold snap can stop one from heating. A heat pump that quits below about 50°F is normal cold-snap behavior, not a failure. A gas heater still works in cold weather. If it still won't heat once the weather warms up, check flow first, then read the error code.

Should I repair or replace my pool heater?

Repair if the heater is under about 10 years old, the failure is an isolated part, the quote is under about 30% of a new unit, and the water has been kept balanced. Replace if it's 15+ years old, the heat exchanger or compressor has failed ($4,000–$5,000), the repair quote exceeds about 50% of replacement, it's the second repair in two years, or you can see it leaking from the unit.

How much does a new pool heater cost in Boca Raton?

A new heater installed runs about $5,000–$7,000 in 2026 for a right-sized heat pump or gas unit with full manufacturer warranty. Because a heat exchanger or compressor replacement alone runs $4,000–$5,000, replacing the whole unit is often only $1,000–$2,000 more than fixing a major internal.

Heat pump vs. gas vs. solar: which is right for South Florida?

A heat pump is the lowest, most consistent cost to run for most South Florida pools, and far more efficient than gas; its weakness is losing output during a cold snap. Gas costs the most per hour but heats fastest and works in any weather, so it's the right choice for spas and occasional fast heat-up. Electric-resistance heaters are very expensive to run and salt air destroys them. Solar is the cheapest to run but can leak onto and damage your roof and may void a roof warranty.

My heater leaks water. Is that a problem?

Usually not. Nine times out of ten a little water on the pad is just condensation. But if it's a lot of water clearly coming from the unit, that often points to a failed heat exchanger, which typically means a new heater. If you can physically see it leaking, shut your pool pump off and call us; running it can make the damage worse.

Do you repair Hayward, Raypak, Pentair and AquaCal heaters?

Yes. All major brands across heat pumps, gas heaters and solar: Hayward, Raypak, Pentair, AquaCal, Jandy, Sta-Rite and more. We diagnose the specific brand and model, read the fault code, verify flow, and quote the exact part in writing.

What warranty do I get on a new heater?

All Hayward and Jandy heaters come with a 3-year warranty. Other brands carry their full manufacturer warranty, and we register it for you at install.

Who actually does the work?

We manage every heater job start to finish under our Florida Certified Pool/Spa Contractor license, CPC1461731, and our crew does most of it. Gas lines, new electrical circuits and refrigerant work are done by licensed contractors — managed by us start to finish. That means a licensed gas contractor for gas lines, a licensed electrician for new circuits, and an EPA 608-certified technician for refrigerant work on heat pumps.
