Contrast therapy — alternating hot and cold immersion — is the fastest growing configuration in wellness facilities, and it creates a water problem neither vessel has on its own. Bathers move between a hot tub and a cold plunge every few minutes, carrying organics, oils, and sanitizer chemistry back and forth with them. The vessels are separate. The contamination is not.
The cross-contamination path
A user sits in 104°F water long enough to sweat, opens their pores, sheds oils and skin, then transfers directly into a 55°F plunge and does it in reverse. Over an evening with a dozen users, each vessel receives everything the other one loosened. The hot side drives it out of people; the cold side collects it and holds it, because cold water oxidizes what it receives more slowly.
The result is predictable and we see it constantly: the plunge in a contrast suite fouls faster than a standalone plunge with the same user count.
Rule one: never share water or filtration
Two vessels, two circuits, two filters, two sanitizer feeds. It sounds obvious and it gets violated on budget installs that tee a single filtration system across both tubs. Shared filtration means every problem in one vessel is immediately a problem in the other, and it makes a fecal or vomit incident a two-vessel closure instead of one. It also makes temperature control fight itself.
Sharing an equipment room is fine and normal. Sharing water is not.
Rule two: a rinse station between vessels
The single most effective piece of engineering in a contrast suite is a shower between the tubs. Not at the entrance to the room — between the vessels, where people will actually use it on the transition. It intercepts the transfer at the moment it happens.
Where a plumbed shower isn't possible, a posted transition rule and a staff member who enforces it does most of the same work. This is the cheapest intervention in the entire pillar and the one most often skipped.

Temperature and the safety envelope
- The hot vessel is bound by the same maximum temperature limits any spa is — and in a contrast suite it will be run hard, so verify the thermostat rather than trusting it. See spa heating and temperature control.
- Contrast protocols push users to hot-cold transitions repeatedly in one session. Post session guidance, keep water accessible, and make sure staff know what overheating looks like.
- Wet floors between two vessels at very different temperatures produce condensation and slip risk that a single-vessel room doesn't have. Surface selection and drainage matter.
Commercial contrast suites
Where a contrast suite is part of a commercial facility, each vessel is evaluated on its own for regulatory purposes — a hot spa and a cold plunge are not one installation because they sit next to each other. Confirm classification and permitting for each with the county health department, then run each to whatever applies.
