Most of the “chemistry problems” we get called out on are actually circulation problems — the water isn't moving through the filter fast enough, so the chemicals are stuck fighting a battle the filter should be winning. Turnover is the first number to check on any struggling pool, and it's the one homeowners skip.
The formula
Turnover time (hours) = Pool volume (gallons) ÷ Flow rate (gpm × 60)
Or: Turnover time = Gallons ÷ (gpm × 60).
Do the math out loud. Say you've got a 15,000-gallon pool and the system is actually moving 42 gpm. That's 42 × 60 = 2,520 gallons an hour. 15,000 ÷ 2,520 comes out right at 6 hours per turnover. Sixth-grade math — and it tells you more about why a pool is cloudy than any test strip ever will.

Your local code may be stricter, so always verify with your state and county. Florida's public-pool code (DOH) runs close to these. Here's the part that matters: on the commercial side an inspector will actually check, but on residential pools down south, nobody is checking anything. The pool doesn't care whether an inspector shows up — bacteria grow at the same rate either way.
Why 4 turnovers ≈ 98% filtered
Here's the trap: one turnover does not mean you filtered all the water. Pool water mixes continuously, so filtration is exponential rather than linear:
- 1 turnover: ~63% of water has passed through the filter
- 2 turnovers: ~86%
- 3 turnovers: ~95%
- 4 turnovers: ~98%
- 5 turnovers: ~99.3%
Flip that first number around: after one full turnover, roughly 37% of your water never touched the filter. That's a third of the pool your chlorine has to sanitize with no mechanical help — which is exactly how you end up dumping more and more chemicals into a pool that never quite clears. It's also why “run the pump for 24 hours after a shock” translates to roughly four turnovers for most pools. It's not arbitrary — it's the diminishing-returns point.
Verifying actual flow rate
Your pump's nameplate flow is not your real flow. The gpm number on the pump label is what that pump produces on a test bench, not in your backyard. System resistance, filter pressure, and plumbing geometry all cut real flow below the rated number. Ways to verify what you're actually moving:
- Flow meter on the discharge line — best, required on commercial pools
- Pump curve + system curve intersection— engineering estimate, plus or minus 15%; our TDH and pump curves guide walks through the whole calculation
- Timed bucket test at a hose bib — crude, but better than nothing for small systems
Worked example
Pool: 20,000 gal. Required turnover: 6 hours.
Required flow: 20,000 ÷ (6 × 60) = ~56 gpm.
Your pump plate says 100 gpm at 50 ft TDH. Your system's actual TDH measures 65 ft. Real flow: ~75 gpm (from the pump curve). You're above code. ✓
Notice the gap: the label promised 100 gpm and the system delivers 75. That pump is doing its job — the plumbing just taxes it. A tech who skips this math will swear the pool is fine because the pump “sounds strong.”
Signs of inadequate turnover
- Persistent cloudy water despite correct chemistry
- Algae returning in corners even with good FC
- Filter pressure sitting unusually low without a recent clean
- Skimmer water not moving briskly
- Uneven chemical distribution (readings vary by pool zone)

Fixing low turnover
- Clean or backwash the filter (first and easiest)
- Check for air leaks on the suction side (the pump will lose prime or run hot)
- Clean skimmer and pump baskets
- Inspect for kinked hoses, closed valves, debris
- Verify impeller condition (wear/scaling)
- If nothing helps: hydraulic inspection. Possible undersized plumbing or wrong pump.

The South Florida turnover problem
Down here the water sits in the high 80s all summer, the bather load never really stops, and the afternoon storms wash debris and nutrients into the pool almost daily. A pool up north can coast on marginal circulation for half the year because it's closed. A Boca or Boynton pool works 12 months straight — marginal turnover down here isn't marginal, it's a green pool waiting on a warm week.
The classic South Florida mistake is cutting the pump schedule to save on electric. Run a single-speed pump 4 hours a day on a 20,000-gallon pool moving 56 gpm and you get two-thirds of one turnover — you filtered barely half the water, then gave the other half all night to grow something.
