Pentair IntelliFlo VS3 Troubleshooting: Error Codes, Drive Faults, and Reset — A South Florida Pool Pro's Guide

Decode IntelliFlo VS3 errors 0023 and 0027, drive faults, and comm errors — plus the reset procedure I run every week.

The most likely fix: kill power at the breaker for 30 seconds and restore. The IntelliFlo VS3 throws drive faults under heat, voltage sag, and momentary flow loss — most clear on a clean power cycle. If the same code returns within minutes, you are not resetting, you are diagnosing. In our field experience, the four codes that cover the bulk of VS3 service calls are 0023 (loss of prime / low flow), 0027 (drive temperature / over-current), drive fault (generic VFD protection trip), and comm error (lost contact with the automation controller). Verify exact code-to-symptom mapping against the Pentair IntelliFlo VS3 service manual revision shipped with your unit before acting on a code.

Most common symptoms

  • Display shows a four-digit error code, pump locked out.
  • Pump runs for a few minutes, then drops out and restarts in a loop.
  • Display reads “comm error” and the pump runs at default speed instead of the schedule.
  • Pump trips the breaker on start, or hums for a second and faults.
  • Drive cabinet is hot to the touch and the rear cooling fan is not turning.

Diagnostic walkthrough

  1. Read the code. Get the exact number and a photo of the display. Pentair's IntelliFlo product family has gone through several controller revisions (IntelliFlo i, VS, VSF, VS3); a code like 0023 may not map to the same fault across revisions, so always verify against the service manual that shipped with your specific unit.
  2. Power-cycle at the breaker. 30 seconds off. The drive needs that long to bleed its DC bus capacitors. If the fault clears and the pump runs the schedule for the next 24 hours, you logged a transient.
  3. Check the flow path. A 0023 with a clean basket and open valves is not a flow problem — it is a suction-side air leak. Wet the lid o-ring, check the union o-rings on the suction side, and watch for air bubbles in the strainer pot at speed.
  4. Check the cooling fan. On a 0027 or any drive-temperature complaint, the rear fan does the work. If it is not spinning at speed, the drive will overheat quickly on a hot equipment pad. In our experience, blowing out the heatsink fins with compressed air resolves the majority of heat-related drive faults — but only do this with the breaker locked out.
  5. Check the comm bus. Two wires, RS-485, landed at the pump terminal block. Reseat. Confirm the address dial on the back of the pump matches the controller's expected address. A pump set to address 1 with a controller asking for address 2 = comm error every time.
  6. Measure voltage under load. A meter on the line side at start tells you whether the drive is faulting because of a real fault or because incoming voltage sagged below the drive's ride-through threshold.

Step-by-step fix

The fix follows the diagnosis. For 0023 with a real air leak: tighten unions, replace the lid o-ring, check the pump-to-valve glue joint. For 0027 with hot drive: clean fins, replace the cooling fan if it is not spinning at speed, and consider a sun-shade over the pad. For drive-fault with no other symptom: the drive is on its way out. For comm error: reseat the data wires at both ends, confirm the address, and restart the controller.

I have replaced exactly two IntelliFlo VS3 drives this year out of dozens of fault calls. Most are heat, dirt, or wiring — not the drive itself.

South Florida-specific failure modes

  • Salt air corrosion on the cooling fan bearing. Coastal pools (under a mile from the ocean) see fan failures at 5–7 years. The bearing rusts, the fan slows, the drive overheats, you get a 0027.
  • Equipment-pad heat. West-facing pads with afternoon sun hit 130°F on the cabinet. The drive de-rates above 122°F. Shade or relocate.
  • Lightning strikes. A nearby strike can take out the drive's logic board even with a surge protector in place. Failure rates climb noticeably during the June–September Florida storm season on the routes we service.
  • Hard water on a salt pool. Calcium scale on the impeller drags amperage up, trips the over-current protection. Cell scale and pump scale come from the same chemistry.

When it's time to replace

If the drive faults on a clean startup, with verified voltage in spec, with no heat or flow contributors, the drive is the problem. A new IntelliFlo VS3 drive replacement is roughly the cost of half a new pump — at that point, replace the whole unit. The wet-end on a 10-year-old VS3 is at end-of-life regardless. See our motor diagnostics guide for the amp-clamp procedure and our variable-speed pump primer for what a modern replacement looks like.

When to call a pro

Anything past the breaker-reset and basket-check is a pro call. Drives are 230 V cabinets with stored charge in the DC bus capacitors after power-off — do not open the cabinet. Wet-end disassembly on a 10-year-old VS3 in South Florida sun usually means a new pump anyway. Note that under the U.S. Department of Energy's 2021 Dedicated-Purpose Pool Pump (DPPP) rule (10 CFR 431.465), most residential pool-pump replacements above ~0.711 total horsepower must be variable-speed — a like-for-like swap to a single-speed unit is generally not available. In Florida, pool repair work is regulated by the DBPR (RP / CPC license categories). If the code keeps returning after one reset, schedule a pool equipment repair visit and we will diagnose on-site with a flat-rate quote before any work begins.

FAQ

What does error 0027 mean on a Pentair IntelliFlo VS3? Drive-temperature or over-current fault. Cool the cabinet, clear flow obstruction, reset.

What does error 0023 mean?Loss of prime or low flow. Suction-side air leak, closed valve, clogged basket, or a real prime loss — in that order.

How do I reset the pump? Breaker off 30 seconds, breaker back on. If the fault returns immediately, you are diagnosing, not resetting.

What causes a comm error? RS-485 wiring or address mismatch between pump and controller.

How long should an IntelliFlo VS3 last in South Florida?8–12 years inland, 5–8 years on the coast.
