Most techs learn two of the six multiport positions — Filter and Backwash — and improvise the other four for an entire career. On the commercial side that gap shows up fast: a valve run wrong is a filter that never truly cleans, and a filter that never cleans is a Department of Health inspection waiting to go sideways. The whole point of learning all six positions is that each one exists for a reason, and knowing the reason is what keeps a sand or DE system doing its job.
What a multiport valve actually is
The multiport is the six-position selector mounted on top of or beside a sand filter or a DE filter. One handle, six flow paths. It turns a single tank of media into a multi-purpose machine that can filter, clean itself, drain the pool, or circulate chemicals without filtering. Learn all six positions and when each one is appropriate, and you can diagnose problems the average pool guy can't.
The six positions and what each one does
If you're looking for the “regular service” position, it's called Filter— water runs from the pump into the top of the filter, down through the media, and back to the pool, and that's where the handle lives 99% of the time. Here's the full map:

The inviolable rule: pump off before the handle moves
The spider gasket inside the multiport is what isolates the six channels from each other. Move the handle while the pump is running and the gasket gets dragged across pressurized water and shreds. The failure usually isn't immediate — the valve starts leaking across ports a few weeks later, sending backwash water to the pool or filtered water down the drain, and the pool quietly loses water while nobody can find the source.
Shutting the pump off takes about ten seconds. A shredded spider gasket costs a teardown, a part, and every gallon that ran out the waste line before anyone noticed. That ten-second habit is the cheapest insurance on the equipment pad, so I make it non-negotiable: pump off, every time, before the handle moves.
Rotary vs. slide valves
Multiports come in two mechanical designs:
- Rotary (lever-and-spring)— the traditional spider-gasket design. Most residential filters.
- Slide (push-pull)— a linear valve with a waferred cylinder, fewer positions (typically Filter and Backwash only), more common on large commercial sand filters. Slide valves tend to last longer but give up the versatility of Rinse, Waste, and Recirculate.

The backwash sequence, step by step
- Pump off. Wait 10 seconds for pressure to bleed.
- Rotate to Backwash.
- Pump on. Run until the sight glass runs clear — usually 2–3 minutes.
- Pump off. Rotate to Rinse.
- Pump on for 20–30 seconds.
- Pump off. Rotate back to Filter.
- Pump on. Record the new clean filter pressure on the log.
That last number — not a calendar — is how you decide when to backwash next: run the cycle again when the gauge reads 8–10 psi above the clean baseline. Backwashing on a schedule instead of a gauge either wastes water or lets a dirty filter choke the flow, and on a commercial system low flow is exactly what gets a pool flagged at inspection. One reminder worth repeating: Backwash is for sand and DE media only. Never backwash a cartridge filter — cartridges come out of the tank and get hosed down by hand.
Never skip the Rinse. The whole step costs 20–30 seconds, and skipping it sends the stirred-up sediment sitting in the valve and waste line right back to the pool — a cloudy pool after what should have been a cleaning.
South Florida: why your multiport works harder here
Down here the multiport earns its keep. Summer storms from June through September dump leaves, dirt, and runoff into every pool, which means dirtier media, faster pressure rise, and more backwash cycles than almost anywhere else in the country. Storm season is also where the Waste position pays for itself: vacuuming a storm-trashed or green pool straight to waste spares the filter a shock load it would take weeks of backwashing to recover from.
- Sun-baked valves.A multiport sitting in full South Florida sun dries out its gasket faster than the same valve under a screen enclosure. A handle that's getting stiff is asking for silicone lube before it starts leaking.
- Year-round duty. Northern pools rest half the year. Ours run 365 days, so the handle sees double the cycles and the gasket double the wear.
- Know where your waste line goes.Backwash discharge rules vary by city down here — before you send backwash water down the line, confirm whether yours ends at a dedicated drain, the swale, or somewhere it shouldn't.

When to call a pro
Backwashing and rinsing are homeowner jobs — five minutes, no tools. But some multiport symptoms mean the valve needs to come apart: water trickling out the waste line while the handle sits on Filter (the spider gasket is leaking across ports), a handle that won't drop into its detents, or filter pressure that won't come back down no matter how long you backwash. And if the pump was run against Closed, assume the spider gasket is done — a 30-second mistake is all it takes.
