Pool Automation: Making Your Pool Run Itself

What automation actually does, the brands we install, and the features worth paying for.

Pool automation systems let you control your pump, lights, heater, salt cell, and water features from a smartphone or wall panel — without walking to the equipment pad. For Florida homeowners who want to manage their pool remotely or simply stop manually adjusting timers, automation is one of the highest-value equipment upgrades available.

What automation controls

  • Variable-speed pump — program multiple speed/time schedules; adjust remotely
  • Salt chlorine generator — monitor and adjust output percentage
  • Heater — set target temperature, enable/disable remotely
  • Pool and spa lights — control color, intensity, and light shows
  • Water features — waterfalls, spillways, bubblers, deck jets
  • Pool/spa valve actuators — switch between pool and spa modes automatically
  • Chemical feeders — some systems integrate with pH/ORP controllers

Major platforms

Pentair IntelliConnect / IntelliTouch / EasyTouch — the most widely installed system in Florida. IntelliConnect is the entry-level Wi-Fi controller for single-speed and VS pumps. IntelliTouch handles complex multi-body systems with full actuator control.

Hayward OmniLogic — strong app, intuitive interface, integrates tightly with Hayward ColorLogic lights and Aqua-Rite salt systems.

Jandy iAqualink — excellent app and strong integration with Jandy equipment. Popular in new construction.

Installation requirements

Automation requires compatible equipment (or equipment replacement) plus wiring from the control panel to each device. A full automation retrofit typically takes 4–8 hours for a licensed contractor. Florida law requires a licensed electrical contractor for equipment pad wiring. Budget $800–$2,500 for a typical single-body residential system.

Smart scheduling and savings

Automation's biggest financial benefit is pump scheduling. Florida utility rates vary by time of day (time-of-use rates). Running your pump during off-peak hours (typically 10 PM–6 AM) can reduce pump electricity costs by 20–40%. Automation makes this effortless — set it once and forget it.

The ROI on automation comes from pump scheduling alone for most homeowners. The convenience of phone control is the reason they buy it; the electricity savings are the reason they never regret it.
