Pool Technician Tools: The Route Truck Loadout

The right tools don't just make the job easier — they determine the quality of your work, the speed of your service visits, and whether you diagnose problems correctly or guess wrong. Here's what belongs in every Florida pool tech's truck.

Water testing equipment

• Taylor K-2006 test kit — the industry standard. FAS-DPD chlorine test gives accurate FC readings even at high CYA. Includes CYA turbidity test. Non-negotiable.
• Digital ORP/pH meter — a handheld meter like the Hanna HI98121 gives immediate readings for rapid diagnosis. Needs regular calibration.
• Phosphate test kit — LaMotte or Taylor for identifying algae-fuel problems.
• Digital salt meter — essential for any customer with a salt system. AquaChek TruTest or Hanna devices are faster and more accurate than test strips.

Cleaning equipment

• Telescoping pole — 8–16-foot aluminum or fiberglass. Quality matters; cheap poles flex and make brushing ineffective.
• Wall brush — 18-inch nylon for plaster/fiberglass; stainless steel combination brush for severe algae on plaster.
• Leaf rake (deep bag) — Florida pollen and leaf loads fill a flat skimmer net in seconds.
• Vacuum head and hose — standard vac head plus 35-foot hose for most residential pools.
• Tile brush — pumice stone holder or calcium remover brush for waterline scale maintenance.

Equipment diagnostics

• Pressure gauge — for reading filter pressure precisely. Own one you trust.
• Multimeter — for heater igniters, salt cell voltage, pump capacitors, and any electrical troubleshooting.
• Air leak detection fluid — soapy water or commercial spray for suction-side air leak diagnosis.
• Dye test kit — squeeze bottle dye for pinpointing exact leak locations at skimmers, lights, and fittings.

Safety and logistics

• Chemical-resistant gloves (nitrile or rubber)
• Safety glasses — required when handling acid or shock
• Route management app (Skimmer, Pool Office, or ServiceM8)
• Chemical storage containers with lids and secondary containment
